Rotterdam
Rotterdam is full of public art (not to mention all the buildings and port machinery which have obviously been designed with form as well as function in mind), and these giraffes that look to be very much what they eat were one of the first things I noticed, on the coach from the airport.
This nourty water was offered with lunch at the Maritime museum.
With my friend Dianne van Dam (ne van der Welle) and two of her children, Anne Myrthe and Niels Jan, I went on a walk around what looked like a display rather than working port machinery. Pretty, though.
Niels Jan (left) and Anne Myrthe (right) seem to enjoy having their photo taken by a giant.
Oh dear, there goes the motto.
Queuing to buy the tickets for the harbour tour by boat, I suddenly remembered that not only do I not enjoy boats much, but that the last time I had been on a harbour trip, in Hong Kong in 1998, I had vomited profusely minutes after stepping off the boat. Fortunately, the waters of Rotterdam were much calmer than those of Hong Kong, and after a few minutes on-board I forgot my worries altogether, leaving me free to enjoy the sights.
